Astra1q and ses 25

Any News about Astra 1Q
it will be with 2 beam
one wide beam like 1p
the other beam will be multi spot beam like 9e And astra 28e
 
From a technical point of view I'm looking forward to seeing this satellite in operation and how it behaves, especially if they do use it for spot beams. But from a viewer's point of view I'm not looking forward to it quite so much.
 
It's interesting that SES haven't made any plans to replace the ageing birds on Astra 2 at 28.2/28.5
I wonder if this Astra 1Q with its high throughput spot beams could entice Freesat to move as Sky UK are slowly withdrawing their HD channels and shutting down a lot of transponders on Astra 2, now their online SkyGlass has launched?
 
Several reasons:

Satellites generally last many years longer than their design life - in service failures are very unusual. The life limiting factor is normally they run out of station keeping fuel before the electronics break. The space tug concept is now proven so they could easily contract for a tug to extend the life of a satellite for 5-10 years

3 satellites are no longer needed at 28E as the number of transponders in use is decreasing rapidly. A quick count up suggests several dozen tps are now inactive, so if required one of the birds could be switched off.

TV delivered via satellite is decreasing rapidly in the UK. There is a good reason broadcasting companies are pushing streaming services over satellite delivery. They get instant feedback of EXACTLY who is watching at any particular moment - everyone has to fill out a profile when they sign up for them - & only a few of us deliberately falsify that data to "poison the well" ;) That data is worth its weight in gold to commercial broadcasters. (Plus of course they can try to upsell premium services or micro target adverts.)

Astra 1KR worked For more than 18 Years at 19.2e
.Astra 1L and 1M also working for more than 15 Years
Also within 10-20 years Streaming Services will have the upper hand For Watching Events

I've also wondered if Freesat (or whatever it might be in the future) could eventually move to 19.2E to serve the remaining few who don't have access to high speed internet, especially if they shut down the terrestrial service too in the mid 2030s to make way for 5G/6G. They could probably do it via a single transponder offering a basic package of PSB channels.

But as Analoguesat points out, we could still have a decent satellite option from 28E for a good few years yet so I doubt any moves to Astra 1Q would need to happen for many years. I suppose the real question is, is it financially viable to even keep Freesat going at 28.2E in the future without Sky's help, let alone move it to a new slot and make everyone move their dishes to 19.2E.

I doubt realigning everyone's aging dishes would make sense. Starlink etc will probably be the only option for non fibred premises to get TV by mid 2030s
 
When the Bilsdale transmitter burnt down there were a considerable amount of tv aerials that were either replaced or pointed to temporary alternative relays, then repointed back to Bilsdale after the new transmitter came back on air.
So in essence I don't see the problem of moving a sky mini dish 10cm to the right in order to receive Astra 19.2 come 2028, when Sky leaves Astra 28.2-28.5
These new satellites SES are launching can accomodate multiple transponders that use the same frequencies with these spot beams, so UK and Gemany plus Spain could all broadcast with these spotbeams, using the same frequencies, stopping expat viewers watching outside the official footprint.
There's also lobes covering Portugal and its territories so I'm guessing that MEO & NOS may well be switching at some point in the future, especially as Hispasat is aging ...

you're talking about for homes without fast enough internet to stream one or two HD feeds (which needs what, 5mbit/sec?) . in 2035 that number will be tiny. the whole project wouldn't be worth it

All I was thinking was that if Kabelio can rent a couple of transponders on Hotbird to service a few homes in the countryside away from cabled areas of Switzerland, I don't see why we couldn't do a similar thing in the UK via 19E for those people living in remote areas of the UK.

But maybe I'm being too pessimistic on the rollout of rural fibre & 5G internet and maybe most people will have decent internet speeds in 10 years time, in which case there probably isn't a need for a satellite TV service.

yeah, I'm assuming that by 2035 Starlink and similar will fall significantly in cost and that it will be nearly impossible anyway to live your life with a sub 20 meg connection

I suspect the biggest obstacle will be the way a lot of modern Sky dishes quite quickly rust to repoint them anywhere else other than to replace them.
