Broadband Speed Part 3

Upgraded last month to 100Mb

Still escargot speed...

Switching to vodamoan next week, 80/20 package, so hopefully better speeds than the Plusnet 55/10 I'm on at the moment...

Upload speed is a bit down today. Dang these miserly rural connections.

Better than mine at least...

Since Quickline took over our original FWA provider, Clannet, I have noticed that even when the system is heavily contended, I still get the headline 20Mbps service, which is an improvement. Before, speeds could drop to 7 or 8 Mbps in the evenings, when neighbours are streaming Telly.

Our local cabinet has now been fibre enabled, so Ive been doing some investigating. The minimum speed Plusnet will guarantee is 9 meg give or take a couple of tenths. Line speed is quoted at 11-18 meg down 1 up. For probably 5 meg more than Im getting atm they want an extra 12 quid a month. I think I'll wait for a better offer than that......

Why not go fibre?

EDIT - That is the fibre offer!!

Too expensive for the additional speed benefit. If I was going to get full fibre speeds I wouldnt mind but Im not forking out another 12 quid a month for a 5 meg improvement. I dare say there will be a better offer come along at some point.

Is that slightly improved speed for FTTC? How far from you is the cabinet? Frankly it's pathetic if it is FTTC.

Yup thats FTTC. The cab is well over a mile (via road - gawd knows where the cables actually run!)

Yes a lot of the time FTTC is no better than ADSL2. The same distance rules apply - just from the cabinet you're connected to and not the main exchange.

AS, does that mean you won't be moving back?

No idea atm CJ. It'll be months before the other place is ready to live in again - when I was up there a couple of weeks ago the ground floor was a complete disaster area. The living room was a brick shell and nothing else apart from the double glazing (which was filthy from all the former walls being passed out the handy gap)

I keep getting called up asking to upgrade but I really don't feel the need tbh:

On't Vodamoan network now:
