Digibit R1 possible fault?

So I just plugged a brand new Digibit R1 in, everything connected, Ethernet light on the back flashing every five seconds or so but the box shows a white power light for about one second before just changing to red and not doing anything else, the front status light for Ethernet never comes on, it just seems to sit there doing nothing and I can’t see the box on the network.
Obviously I’ve done a reset, swapped Ethernet cables and I even realised I had another power adaptor from a different device that outputs the exact same power requirements, tried that but the same issue occurs.
Has anyone else seen this issue before?

No I haven’t, just a Netstream 4Sat.

I can’t get to the web display, it doesn’t appear on the network.

The network light isn’t lit on the front of the device.

I’ve read that some people have had issues with cat 5 cables which is what I was using, so I have tried a different cat 5, a 6 and 7 cable but still nothing.

I’ve tried the reset procedure.

I’ve also just tried a completely separate router with no other devices apart from my laptop but it still just shows the red light and the network light still doesn’t light up so I’m pretty stumped.

Yes but apart from the red light it still just seems to be dead, it's literally brand new out of the box, but it doesn't seem to want to do anything, I don't know what else I can try, everything I see about this model is praise for how good they are, but surely they can't be this picky over a standard lan.

Yeah already done on both routers but nothing, I’ve scanned the network with a separate scanning tool but still nothing unfortunately.

Unfortunately it sounds like you may need to contact your seller and return for refund and or exchange.

Yeah we have spoke, he appears to be a genuine guy, it might be that it was faulty at production, these things sometimes happen.

From what I’ve read online some people have had issues with capacitors popping, from what I’ve seen from the internals online it looks like they might be aluminum electrolytic capacitors and the oxide layer inside the capacitor can break down just in storage it can cause high leakage and then when you power it on current rushes through to the weak points which causes failure, these type of capacitors only have 2-3 years shelf life before they can fail.

Anyway we spoke and agreed that I can open the unit up, check the capacitors and look for any other faults, if nothing can be found it looks like he will give me a partial refund but he wants to test it himself as well, he also said that if I can fix it or even if not and I keep it he will send me £60, what I really want is for it to just bloody work because these boxes are meant to be brilliant and my Netstream 4Sat is definitely dying haha.

How did you get on checking the capacitors - I found 3 near the power input needed replacing on a unit which died in service, unsure if they would die in storage though

Hi yeah so one of the capacitors seemed slightly bulged at the top, I decided in the end to replace all of them with high quality capacitors, apparently they can die in storage, depending on quality this can happen within 2-4 years depending on temperature.

After that the Ethernet started working correctly.

It still wouldn’t show up on the network so I went into it by serial and found that the firmware seemed to be corrupt, which apparently can also happen in storage, obviously I couldn’t re-flash it because they don’t make the firmware files public.

I flashed it with aftermarket satip-axe instead and it came online perfectly, stable as hell and good to go. ;)

Yeah exactly, I don’t know why they stopped production because they are brilliant, stable as hell after the repair and way better than a Netstream.
