Dreambox 500 - JTAG Information

To check if your MAC address box login to your box using telnet and enter either:

1. ifconfig

or

2. cat /proc/bus/dreambox



I found the info below elsewhere but either it loses something in translation or seems to do it twice.. so perhaps choose one method only.

To change your MAC address:

Use an init file:

Create an init file with another MAC address in a text editor (ideally a UNIX compatible one) and enter this:

ifconfig eth0 down
ifconfig eth0 hw ether 00:09:34:F4:xx:xx
ifconfig eth0 up


Save this file with the name init and ftp the file to /var/etc on the Dreambox. Reboot the Dreambox and re-check your MAC address. Do NOT delete the init file after you have changed your MAC address.

Change it using telnet:

Login again to your Dreambox in telnet mode and click Format option and type:

ifconfig eth0 down ; ifconfig eth0 hw ether 00:09:34:xx:xx:xx ; ifconfig eth0 up

(xx xx xx can be any HEX double digits) and click enter. To check your new MACaddress enter ifconfig

I haven't tested it as I don't have a fake box.

If your MAC starts with 00:12:25 then it's a fake.
If your MAC starts with 00:09:34 then it is a genuine box.

Don't forget to "chmod 755 init" to allow the script to execute...

You shouldn't delete the init file. It's not a permanent change.
If you delete it and reboot, you come back to previous MAC Adress... stored in bootloader.

Another GREAT and PERMANENT solution is to generate a bootloader binary file with modified MAC Adress :
I've got an archive named "dm500mac_generator.zip" to do this.
I'm going to upload and give you the url in this thread...

Unfortunatly not yet. I haven't got 100ohms resistors to build my JTAG. I have several other values, but no 100ohms ! ;(

Doesn't matter, I've got another DM500S with Nabilo... so I can wait a few days to get the resistors in my mailbox. ;)

If you speak about MAC Adress solution, I think the ultimate solution is here :

It's called dm500mac_generator.zip and changes the MAC Adress stored in bootloader binary file.
You just have to put the MAC Adress you want (Maybe something like 00:09:34:xx:xx:xx ?) in this software, then select the bootloader binary you want to modify, and that's it : a new bootloader file is generated.

JTAG it, and enjoy !

I'm starting to think this JTAG stuff is only myth!

No- fixing a dead clone. If it's dead how can you change the MAC address?

Can anyone say "I fixed my dead clone by doing x, y and z. These are the steps I took and these are links to the bootloaders. This is my cable."?
 
Hi again...

the step is easy and simple...

1- get the files to i add in this topic no others

2- see if have the right conf in your parallel port
ECP+EPP printer port setup + never use interrupt

3- make the simple cable parallel and resistor
DB25 male printer connector
6 wieres + 5 resistors of 100 ohms
LPT jtag
02--100r--11
03--100r--09
04--100r--07
05--100r--03
11--100r--01
25--------16

4- connect your cable in dm500 board
see my picture in attachments

5- try to make to connect in dm500
in same time to power on in dm500 press the connect in jtag_windows
this is the problem....try it lot of times
if see the write on just press and in 2 mins the your box is back to life

With the tests done I've understood better how it works great:

The secret is in 1º do connect to the program and then turn on the clone, but with a certain delay. This delay depends on the speed of your CPU, the faster CPU's, minor the time/delay (between 0 e 1 seconds).

Change the priority of the program jtag_windows.exe on the task manager for the real time which must turn more real the delay itself, once the program will give maximum priority of the use of the CPU.



About the timming, if it shows you only "ERROR:register test failded" then the jtag is ok, but you have turned on the box sooner then expected, if it shows you the 4 times "ERROR: communication with LPT/JTAG", then you must turn on the box sooner, or the jtag isn't ok.

Remmember that you must connect the box always after making connect on the program.

Is the photo of the JTAG cable shown in post #1 not relevant?

Did you try connecting via the RS232 port (with a suitable connector) as this is connected to the part of the PPCB where you've soldered the cables to?

Does anyone know where pin 1 on the dreambox goes to on the pcb bord. I damaged the solder when removing the connections & am looking for another place to connect the wire to?
 
i done the same had to folow the track and solder to it
still not got mine working

I got mine working. This sounds crazy but works. I put some solder on the end of the cable that i couldn't connect (wouldn't work without for some reason) then scratched the insulation off the tiny wire nearest where the original blob was on the dreambox board .Put a vice grips around one probe of the multimeter & rested this on the wire which should be on top of the tiny trace on the dreambox. Now with the other end of the multimeter scratch a little of the surface where the trace is further down & put your multimeter on continuity. Move the probe with vice grips around it until you here the beep. Once its beepeing you know you have a good connection. Pain in the arse but its the only way i could get it to work. Now I'm having trouble with the mac address generator.
 
The only image that boots for me is dm500_alps_boot_00_00_00_00_00_00.bin which creates a mac address of 00:00:00:00:00:00 & so i can't get online. Has anyone got the mac generator working that allows there dreambox to boot? I have flashed a file to the box using the mac generator but it doesn't boot. Do i need to unsolder the cables from the box for it to boot because with the other image there is no need?
