Hi,

I realised today that I don't have a big enough ladder to put my dish up high enough on the side of my flat. So, I need to get the installer to do it for me.

It's a Penta 85 dish on a Moteck motor. Have all the ingredients except the new coach bolts (and a ladder). The dish probably needs to go at height of around 7-10 meters from the ground on south facing wall.

However! If you are feeling brave then an installation above the gutter on the north facing wall would be preferable (or on the flat roof if you have a ladder long enough).

You may struggle with finding someone to work at that height off of ladders, have you thought of hiring a scaffold tower?
 
Just to show you what you would be dealing with...

The current "Too Low" label is where the bracket it at the moment. The dish is out too much so vans and lorries that park there may clip it. This side faces 0 degrees southward. You can see var.ious Sky dishes pointing towards 28 degrees for reference

Listed in order of preference.

Postion 1 is a good position as it's high up, fairly invisible and overlooks the trees

Position 2 is again a good position, fairly discreet but I will be unable to see western sats much (1W max I guess, which is not a huge deal) and need a longer stand off bracket

Position 3 has the best visibility of the sky but fairly high up

Position 4 is again a possibility but limits me to eastern satellites (need a longer stand off bracket - 36"?, then maybe up to 8W?)

The flat roof is on the other side that I don't have a picture of as it's sort of an extension to the flat, but you'll need a long ladder to get up there (from ground up is 7 meters, so I guess a 10 meter ladder needed) - but it is flat and not sloped like in the picture.

You may find that installing a motorised dish on someone else's wall may upset them, you really have to consider only locations on your own flat.

10m height is higher than most installers will install from a ladder.
 
Position two or three is the best place I'd say.

Which one is your flat?
 
Hi guys, thanks for your help so far.

I've attached a bunch of photos for your examination :) The satellite view one is taken from dishpointer, with the red outline being our flat on the 2nd (top) floor.

I was thinking of another potential location for the dish is alongside someone else's Sky dish (on our wall!) which obviously has enough clearance for 28E. Looking at dishpointer, it looks like I'd have enough clearance for eastern sats too. But, again, this may be a little high.

I did have another idea :-idea. Install the dish from our balcony! from the balcony wall to the end of the gutter is 22 inches. So, a 24 or a 36 inch TK bracket and a long-ish pole could do the job well I think. The problem would be with aligning the dish above the gutter - I thought of that too!

Since I already have a mount on the south facing wall with a perfectly vertical pole, I could align the dish there and then tighten all the elevation and azimuth bolts on the dish and the motor. Then, assuming I manage to get a good vertical pole, all I'd have to do is put the dish on the pole and raise it up above the roof. Then I would simply rotate the pole to find my reference sat (1W) and I am done! Is this feasable?

That's some overhang and you'd need 36 inch TK brackets. Also by moving the assmenly as described, you'd have to start all over again with alignment/setup.
 
Is there a hatch or opening skylight to the flat roof over your balcony?
 
There's no opening (despite a thing looking like one). All my problems would be solved if there was!
 
In fact, there's also position 5 to consider. Will definitely lose western sats, but no biggie. Would need to check for clearance for 53E though (a necessity!)...

Not sure you'd clear 1°W, hard to see from the pictures.
 
Is there rear vehicular access? Maybe a cherry picker would do the trick, either mouting on the balcony wall above gutter, or onto the flat part of the roof above, on a NPRM.

Not as far as the balcony. To be honest, hiring a lorry or any of the heavy duty material is beyond my budget and seems on overkill (but perhaps necessary).

I'll be happy with a semi-discreet installation by an installer (Robbo? :)). Although, I have no idea how people managed to get up on the roof to install the aerials on those chimney stacks...

Decent set of triples and a roof ladder I would imagine.
