HELP! My friend has given me his Dreambox to fix

I like the fact that with a std. image in flash and everything else on USB I can chop and change quickly (especially it it dies on it's butt) and can remove all the naughty stuff in 47 nanoseconds if I need to - like if the box were to go t!ts up and I had to return it. I'm sure there should be at least one full stop in there somewhere, but hey...

Also, the std image should be more stable, mainly because it's smaller.

I would never go back to putting a third party image in flash unless something changed in the future which gave it a distinct advantage.

Just my opinion.

'Fraid not m8. Main reason is that it's over the 2MB PHP file upload limit, plus if we start letting firmware on, we won't be able to control the rest of the customers uploading dodgy stuff.

Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference without pulling it to a thousand bits, and we don't got no time for dat nonsense :D

Well the good news is I have 'null modem cabled it' and loaded the boxman cvs image from yesterday into flash. It works! So hooray!

Now I have a few questions.

1. Its a little confusing with this debate on having an official image in flash or not. So whats the consensus of opinion? Should I get rid of the boxman image and put dmm unmodded cvs into it?

2. I backed up and restored the settings using flashwizard. The only thing it didn't seem to back up were the motor settings, ie longtitude and lat. Is this normal? No biggie to re-enter it I'm just wondering.

3. What are the best doobries at the moment to install. Newcamd?

4. Are there lists channel data available anywhere so I can leave it for him with an up date channel list, avoiding a lengthy rescan for me? (And also interested in learning this for when I get a dreambox one day) I've seen some at a certain website saying Stations settings for DreamNetCast. Whats dreamnetcast? And which tool do people normally use to save/restore their settings that are posted online?

Only my input but now you have a cvs image in the flash leave it until you find some incompatabilitiy issues. I update the cvs every few months. But I cant help playing.
Make sure the cvs matches the images you have on usb or hdd.
I just keep the FW uptodate and always use this to flash or load images.
For me Camd 3 works fine with my Digit Alb & xplus cards in slots, Black ice with redlight in it in cam slot.
Touch wood no major issues with 7000s.
Thinking of an update but may wait for the 8000s if it materializes:cool:

Yeah, what your doing is cool IMHO.

The official 1.09 image released by DMM is great an' all, but with that in flash, you won't be able to load the latest images on USB as they're not compatible.

The updated Boxman image is great in flash. Leave it unmodded. It's just a standard CVS development of the original image. DMM cooperates with the upgrade of these images by other open source developers, so it's cool to flash this.

My advice, as I say, would be to leave that alone now, and plug in a USB stick with Flashwizzard Pro V6.01 (V5 won't work with these latest images) and chuck some cool stuff on it. I would suggest the latest PLi, latest Gemini, and SDT DaVinci 5.3,

Download camd3 and Newcamd into all three images (plus keys of course - all available from the blue button in all three images) and see which you like most!

P.S. Try some backups in FWP again. IIRC there are a few options for what it will and wont backup. It should work.

Get some PET settings for your transponders etc, but I like to scan the big birds like 13E, 19.2E and 30 myself on top. Then you KNOW you have the latest channels :D

Only takes 5 - 10 mins each, no biggie.
 
Thanks for your help again! I've done what you suggested. Been trying to find a way to make it play/stream avi files from the pc upstairs, not having much luck with that using the VLC method, the plug in makes the dreambox crash on the gemini 2.6 image. I loaded in the pet123 settings. Teachers TV amd Rapture TV seem missing from it and I can't find it rescanning using the transponders listed on king-of-sat. Will look into that further. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hopefully when I give the box back he will have a really kick ass image to play with and now I have learnt a bit I can show him how to do all these things with it.
