"Legal Freeview for Expats"????

According to satcures blog for this month:

"You will soon be able to watch Freeview channels wherever you can get an Internet connection to your laptop, iPad, iPod-touch, iPhone etc. Connect to your TV then sit back and watch.
The first system that allows you to watch Freeview legally* outside the UK.
*Provided you have a UK TV licence."

Anyone any idea if this is an official Freeview / UK Broadcasters system, or some other thirds party offering...?

What is a TV Licence needed for?
  • To use any TV equipment to watch or record TV programmes as they are being shown on television.
  • This includes watching or recording streamed services and satellite TV broadcast from outside the UK. If you only watch on-demand services, then you don't need a licence

The cynic in me suspects that Satcure's interpretation of what is "Legal" may turn out to be different from what their Lordships intended. That said, Lord Sugar (!) also made similar pronouncements recently, but I'm blowed if I can find them.

Installing Expat Shield and using it to watch the UK channels it's free :)

It also says (same source http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/check-if-you-need-one/topics/terms-and-conditions-top11/):

If any of these terms are determined to be illegal, invalid or otherwise unenforceable by reason of the laws of any state or country in which these terms are intended to be effective, then to the extent and within the jurisdiction in which that term is illegal, invalid or unenforceable, it shall be severed and deleted from these terms.......

I doubt that any license requirement is enforceable overseas: for example I (as well as all French residents - it's pretty much inescapable) already have the necessary license to view TV in France.

I stand open to correction :)
