Nature pics 2

A week last Saturday I persuaded a friend to come with me to look at the River Dee Bore by the old road bridge at Queeensferry, just into Wales. Now you may have been like me and heard of the Bore on the River Severn but up until about 9 months ago I didn't even realise that the Dee had a Bore. And I have lived but two miles from the Dee for nearly all my life.

Anyway, we arrived with ten minutes to spare and I was able to snap a few pictures of the natural phenomenon as it rolled past. I was surprised that we were the only ones there specifically to look at the Bore. Perhaps it was because the forecasted high tide at Liverpool was 9.73m and the best Bores occur when the high tide is over 10m there. I was really pleased to be there and see it in person.

When there's a really high tide the Bore can rise to be 3ft - 4ft but I reckoned it was no higher than about 2ft. Kayakers can ride the front nearly all the way up to Chester but there were none here this time.

Apparently there are about 100 rivers around the world with Bores and about a fifth are in the UK. Indeed the next river up on the coast, the Mersey, also has a Bore.
