New Channel New sky channel to join freesat?

TV with built in Freeview/ Virgin Media TiVo V6 box
My Location

It's been noted in jimbo's DS satellite thread that on:

11.914H SR 27500 FEC 5/6 DVBS QPSK

There is a label called 5828 which is showing the Sky Store promo (which is different to Sky channel 999)

Lovinthetelly has also confirmed that this channel has got Freesat data PIDs attached.

I wonder if this is a test for another Sky channel that's coming to Freesat? Could Challenge be going HD (doubt it), could Sky News HD be coming to Freesat or could it be the new home for a FTA Sky Arts??

Edit: I had assumed that Sky Store was just being used for testing purposes, however, perhaps they are actually bringing Sky Store to Freesat as their website says:

'Sky customers can buy or rent movies from Sky Store via their Sky Q and Sky+ boxes, via the Sky Store app across a range of devices and online at skystore.com. With no subscription needed to access Sky Store, the service is available to anyone online, on the app and on NOW TV boxes.'
 
The boxes would require a means of determining an event has been pid for - a viewing card and decoder , neither of which are available on Freesat - so absolutely no chance of Sky Store on Freesat in the near future until new boxes are designed.

I meant that Sky Store would be ideal for Freesat viewers to rent or purchase material from it and that, perhaps, it would join the Freesat EPG as a barker channel and that the app might be coming to Freesat.

However, it probably isn't this as it's now been posted that Digiguide is listing a channel called 'Pick Alternate' It's being speculated that this might actually be an alternate version of Pick without the football for the ROI.

Might still be useful for Freesatters who dislike football to manually tune into though whilst the other is showing sport.

99.99% of people havent got the faintest idea that there are channels out there that can be tuned in manually.If its not on the Sky (or to a lesser extent Freesat) epg it doesnt exist. Even if they have heard its possible they wont know how to find the info they need or set the box up.

Oh! That is so true some of my neighbours subscribe the others get my old boxes for FTA tv on satellite 28.2E,
The strange thing is that those that subscribe watch BBC-1,BBC-2,ITV,C4,C5,BBC News & Sky News totally unaware that these channels are FTA :)
Also, some channels that are encrypted on the Subscriber boxes are FTA via Satellite such as DMAX & DMAX+1,News channels FTA In HD but encrypted on subscriber boxes CNBC HD,CNN HD,Bloomburg TV Europe HD.

All those channels are fta on my sky drx595 with no card inserted :)
 
On VM cable they are encrypted :eek:

Some years ago a disabled friend with no aerial or satellite dish used to pay for virgin Media. All he used were channels 1-5, the BBC News channel and radio 4. When the DWP cut his disability benefits with the austerity cuts he had to cancel, but they never asked for his box back and he found that all these channels were still available on cable FTA!
 
I know people who have VM only because they refuse to have a satellite dish of any kind, even after I offer to install them a hidden dish :-doh
The biggest problem I come across is people who have bundled tv, phone & broadband packages, they just won't consider switching at all.

I think that all cable channels are now encrypted apart from channels 1-5. It's impossible to check though by taking the card out now that we have virtual cards.

I believe there's something in their franchises that prevents them from encrypting the PSB channels and, in any case, the TiVo boxes overlay a 'You are not subscribed message' over the picture :(

Yes, there is the snobbery factor. It used to be the case that it was always cheaper to get services in bundles, but I now know a fair few who find it cheaper to get different services from different suppliers.

I'm thinking of going back to satellite as Virgin Media are have absolutely abysmal customer service these days. Ofcom recently produced a report that showed that they were the most complained about provider.
 
Anyone who wont consider switching these days is an idiot - its more or less painless.I was with Demon internet for many years. As a small independant company thety were fab. Once they got swallowed up by the big boys the CS was useless. I had a major falling out with them over our supposed heavy usage (on a 2meg line!). I switched to Plusnet - absolutely painless - and with the advantage of a UK based call centre so I can understand the staff! (Demon CS moved to India - no disrespect to the staff there but they were impossible to understand)
 
VM Indian-based support staff "communications issues" were a "real problem" (AKA, A "joke"!) - don't bother with that nowadays, and "make my points" via the VM "community forum" where "real" VM support people do, to a degree, provide a reasonable level of "interactive" support and "action".

Don't expect to get a better service from sky. Always record your own phone calls with them is all I can say.
The other issue with bundles is when people are offered a minor discount - they accept and 'recontract' which means they are stuck with the lot for another 18 months.

Are the Sky call centres in the UK?

Sounds the same as Virgin Media then. Once you're in contract and paying them money, they couldn't care less. Then, when you've had enough and want to cancel, you get through to someone in the UK.
 
The new service mentioned in the OP (5828 on 11914H 27500 5/6) appears to be a new version of Pick UK that, according to Sky's EPG, won't be showing the Premier League games. Freesat data is associated with this service, so I'd expect Pick SD to move to this SID/TP on Freesat.

Pick HD (currently testing on SID 5829 - 12363V 8PSK 27500 2/3) will be showing the 25 Premier League games FTA and will be launching on Freesat. This is a UK beam transponder.

Pick Ireland (12148H) and Pick+1 (12070H) don't appear to be showing football, following the new Pick on 5828 with normal programming replacing any football coverage. These 3 services are on European beam transponders.

I suspect the old Pick SD (12070H, European beam) will encrypt to FTV level so that Sky SD boxes can also access free football.

All a bit complicated, and possible that the 25 games will only be FTA on Pick HD on the UK beam. Things will become much clearer over the next few days, of course.
