Advice Needed SVT World

Hi everyone,

I am interested in gaining access to this channel on 9.0E. I've found this page on SVT's website relating to the subscription and if I'm reading correctly, it seems like they provide their own receiver in order to access this single channel. I have a Openbox V8S and was hoping to somehow just buy the card and hey presto - is that possible or is the additional receiver an essential bit of kit?
 
I don't think your receiver can read Viaccess , so you need a box that does it .
 
Connova's site says Cryptoguard whatever that is.

Cryptoguard is a local Swedish CAS (Conditional Access System). (North of Sweden, probably a Luleå university spin-off).
To receive signals you need the box OR a cryptoguard cam, as @battenfan says.

So you might get away with a box + CAM + card with subscription.

And it's on C-band BTW.

But it begs the question - what are you looking for? You can get a lot of it from svtplay.se - or are you looking for specific programs?
Also, I have the broadcast channels as FTA here via DTT and cable, but not a lot worth watching...
Anything special you fancy?

I'm actually learning Swedish at the moment so having access to a linear channel will be useful. Secondly, for a few years now I've been watching a show called Melodifestivalen live via SVT Play but as this is quite popular worldwide, the stream isn't very reliable when viewers peak. SVT World simulcasts the show with SVT 1 which is a real bonus.

Is it definitely C-band? I've managed to tune the channel in to my Openbox but its obviously encrypted.

Ah, sorry, no. That was an over-simplification on the website.
The Eutelsat 9A is Ku band:

Satellite: Eutelsat 9A
Orbital location: 9 degrees East
Frequency: 11 919 MHz
Polarisation: Vertical
FEC: ¾
Symbol Rate: 27.500 Mbit/s
Transponder: 60
Universal LNB (Ku-band)

Whereas the Thaicom version is C-band:

Satellite: Thaicom 5
Orbital location: 78,5 degree East
Frequencey: 3 640 MHz
Polarization: Horizontal
FEC: ¾
Symbol Rate: 28.066 Mbit/s
Transponder: 6G
LNB: Global Extended C-band

So you should be okay with a Ku-band LNB.
 
SVT-W used to be one of the easily opened Viaccess types, I can remember watching it a few years ago. Secure for quite a while though now.
 
I'm guessing they weren't selling as many subscriptions these days, which is understandable considering the amount you had to pay for it. With the use of VPNs and their own SVT Play service, I guess the need isn't really there anymore

Learning Swedish from a TV channel is not really the best way, unless the channel gives a learning language course.
I would suggest, if I may, to use self learning courses, for example
- Linguaphone (They had Swedish course few years ago. A bit too expensive)
- Teach Yourself Swedish (recommend the Kindle Enhanced option instead of book and CD)
