Which is the best Sci Fi series...Past and Present

Another holy resurrection, the Whoops Baghdad thread brought up a folder of Gabrielle Drake imagery (phwoar !) on the office desktop, and this link.

The magazines Countdown, quickly followed by TV Action in 1973 ran a series of UFO storylines that differ greatly from the television series.

"2001:A Space Odyssey"(1968) is a film for eternity.The beginning of the film,with the tribes of monkeys fighting for a pool of water,is the brightest and deepest metaphor in the history of cinema for this kind of film.All the history of mankind is concentrated in this metaphor,a brilliant idea from a great director:Stanley Kubrick.
 
On a personal, and very "banal" (!), level, my then-girlfriend and I went to see that film in Luton just after the release date, and were "impressed"/"moved" ("whatever"??) - but then, the next morning, I discovered that her ex-boyfriend, or one of his mates, had put sand in the engine of my car which was parked near her flat. That cost me a "lot" - and thus it "sticks in memory" :(

PS: Has anyone mentioned "Space: above and beyond" ? - one of my all-time favourites, but rarely, if ever, repeated nowadays (for "business politics" reasons as I understand it :rolleyes: )

That film did seem pretty shocking when I was a snapper. Im still a bit gripped about the poll, it seems to be USA flavour of the day. I'm just so fond of those bad english ones, they have great memories but cringe factor when viewed now. Good to see votes for Hitch hikers and Red dwarf...

Ah, not a series (except in books by the author). No director is likely to do the third with plausible justice now the second has been consigned to the present (1984) , cassette tapes and all.

Agreed - nominating "2001..." was " a bit of a stretch"
 
My personal favourite sci-fi series has got to be Blake's 7. It is something of a guilty pleasure for me. I must have watched the entire series from beginning to end at least 40 times since the VHS tapes came out in the early 90s and the DVDs in the 2000s Bit of a nerd really when it comes to it.
 
The early Doctor Who's, not the current rubbish, my favourites being the Tom Baker episodes.
 
I watched two Sci fi series this year, the first one if The Expanse - I read most of the books

I was watching the series more or less why I was reading them, I made sure to keep the book reading slightly ahead of the series, and I must say that they really kept the TV plots really tight with the book. I liked both, and enjoyed the TV series as well.

The second one I watched is The Foundation, a TV adaptation of the Asimov Foundation

I read the books probably 20 years or more ago, so I did not remember many details so the series was like a new story. Again, I liked it as well - what do you guys think?
 
Over Christmas I did watch a couple of the Rick and Morty episodes online. Not the best series ever by any means but wholesome family viewing overall.

Watched most of the expanse a couple of years back, liked it. Just finished the first series of Foundation, like you read the series 40 years or more ago, so had forgotten most of it, took some understanding, particularly with the amount of time and scenario switching, but looking forward to the second.
 
Currently watching Series 6 of The Expanse on Amz Prime - as always, very intricate plots which seem difficult to follow in detail (especially after a drink or two!)

None of that others streaming ATM seem that good - but maybe that's because I would be starting so far back that I'd have to binge on a series to get to know it, but don't have the time and patience.

The one I would really like to watch again is "Above and Beyond" which was on the SciFi Channel (IIRC) a few years ago but appears to have been "banned" for some reason that I can't remember ATM - very "basic" but watchable - "Chiggy von Richtofen anyone"?:eek:

Ta - didn't think to look on Youtube because ISTR seeing "something" several years ago that said that the series had been blocked by "somebody" from being re-shown anywhere. :D

I'll load YouTube on the Roku streamer and then take a look.
 
And, pity, the next series of "The Orville" isn't being shown until next Spring (even though, as I understand the situation, it has been completed) as that is quite a funny take on the Startrek series, but with a few more serious elements.

Depends on the beer! ATM , having had a "warning" from the doc, gotta keep to the low alcohol stuff (Adnams Ghost Ship 0.5% - very nice for that class of beer) for the foreseeable future!" :(

OTOH, might means I get past 2 episodes at a time (when, that is, I have time to watch it).
 
The doctor warned you off normal beer ? :-wow
