Why did reset software fix no signal

Hi,

Recently moved from near Shrewsbury to near Swindon into temp accommodation until find new property. Took my old Humax box with me, bought a sat dish and managed to set up working fine using a portable tripod arrangement and one of those satellite finder meters. This worked fine until recent Storm Dave!

Decided to do a proper installation using a mount fixed to a wall, try as I might couldn’t get a signal so after trying for 3 days got a professional in and he aligned within a couple of minutes and was getting full strength and quality on both channels - result!

Watched a bit of tv in the afternoon, all fine, then switched back on in the evening to watch news, got weak/no signal message. Checked in settings, both channels showing nothing, very occasionally get one channel coming in then out. Tried swapping connections etc etc but nothing. In desperation I did a “factory reset” which included changing postcode to our new location and (I think). a rescan of TV channels.

My question is why should I have been getting good signals when initially the professional set the dish up then lose them and then get them back after a factory reset?

Hope this makes sense and thanks in advance for any replies.
 
The answer may lie in your second sentence ...... "old Humax box".

I have two of the first gen Humax Freesat boxes - one PVR and one non-PVR. Whilst (touch wood) they both still work flawlessly, the installed population of them as a whole is indeed old and prone to degradation and failure. Smoothing capacitors in their power supplies are frequently the cause of all sorts of weird and wonderful issues, including sporadic loss of some or all channels.

If your problems truly are box related, you might wish to know Manhattan are on the cusp of bringing a new recordable Freesat box to market. I shall be buying one and putting the Humax into retirement (or maybe selling it on).
 
You might also find the LNB drifts in frequency slightly when the system is powered.

There is a frequency lock parameter that the receiver may not be able to catch when warm/or cold outside.
 
Sort of follow on question.

System been working fine since the reset - good signal strength and quality. However found that some programs I’ve been trying to record (Bangers and Cash on U and yesterdays) just don’t record. Tried several times and wouldn’t record. Did another reset and retune and “ U and Yesterdays ‘ listed as one of the channels saved. However when I try to view I get a “no signal” message - which explains why it didn’t record previously.

Just like to know why.
