So today I was feeling a bit down ..as I have been most of December ..
You may have noticed my infrequent visits of late.
I was very much in reflective mode ..and I started to think of the tunes that formed part of my youth ..which inevitably had me wondering about my album collection in the loft.
In particular I wanted to hear Stackridge the album again ..
..and although I have still got a working stack system ..I considered the possibility of re-visiting my vinyl and getting in on my server ..
So ..an impulse buy ...I bought a cheapish unit that claims to do just this ...

..a bit cheesy looking ..but if it does the job ?
I'm now wondering if I am restricted to mp3 ? ...or can it perhaps do lossless ..saayyy flac
Anyone know how effective these type of units are ..
the pro's and con's etc..
Not expecting miracles ..but there is plenty of space on my Vipernas for storage .

When I copied some of my records over, years ago, I recorded mine straight to cd, then I ripped the cd to my nas drive.

I used Audacity to record them.

Looking on the website, they do mention flac files

I too considered this Chris ...but I wanted as near lossless as possible with minimal compression..
and direct conversion rather than through a 'middle man' /CD
And not in track form ...just Side A Side B ....as though flipping the album ..
So the internal ADC would be relevant for flac I think..

Yeah I have quite a few side a and side b files.

I don't mind that as it's just like playing the record.

The biggest problem was splitting it in to individual songs so I can type in the details.

But I haven't used it for years (audacity)

On Some albums the timing and duration of the tack spaces ..lead in lead out are almost as important as the tack itself ..
Recently tried listening to an MP3 rip in track form of 'Dark Side of the Moon' ...
without the 'active gaps' ..it simply didn't work for me..

I had the opposite problem, one of my favourite albums is Hot August night, a live concert, the Album has a small scratch, so bought the CD, but the CD had inserted gaps between the songs, which made it clumsy to listen to, used audacity to edit them back out for my MP3.:)

In your head you almost have an 'analogue roadmap' which is anticipating how and when the music should start ..
They fook with this ..and it simply loses something..
You explained the problem perfectly buddy..

..and with vinyl ..even where there _should_be spaces...those gaps are not truely silence ...they contain nuances ...that simply putting in a totaly silent gap cannot fully replace..

I would not turn those beautiful sounding unaltered vinyl stereo recordings into some sort of smashed up audio junk.

Any form of digital recording is going to loose one half of the audio, I would instead look into getting a audio card that will record true left and right audio and give you the ability to record true left and right wave files.

Why?

When a ADC (Analog to Digital Converter) is used it has a sample rate, this sample rate can be 32 to 48 KHz, (32,000 to 48,000 times a second) the higher the sample rate the better the recording sounds, what happens is when it is recording the Left channel the information on the Right channel is lost, and the reverse when the Right channel is being recorded.

The same with playback through a DAC, (Digital to Analog Converter) when the Left channel is being outputted the Right channel is gone.

Also all forms of digital recording formats use some sort of digital compression, again when it is being recorded in a digital format some part of the analog information is lost to never never land.

Now some may say that it doesn't matter as the sample rates are too high for the ear to hear the difference, but play the vinyl then play the CD, on a good system you will hear the difference.

On a true audio system the L and R channels are recorded in separate xxx(Left).wav files and yyy(Right) and stored as such, and played back without compression, this takes up more romm on the hard drive but the sound is almost as good as you can get, without going live.
 
Sounds like a good idea, but how would you go about playing the left and right wav files?

Will say kodi or vlc play both files at once?
 
A couple of weeks ago I was in Best Buy looking for some stuff, I ran across a demo of "True Audio" recordings, a sales person from Denon had a demo setup, the new audio video receiver he was demoing had a 4K Sony BluRay player attached to it with a OLED HDTV as the display, the speakers were electrostatic and were flawless in the sound reproduction quality.

Now for the demo he had a music concert recorded in DVD, BluRay and 4KHD, he also had a small USB 3.0 128 GB flash drive with the same program on it.

First he played the DVD (a small part) the video and sound were OK, then he played the BluRay, it was much better, then he played the 4k and WOW the video jumped off the screen but the audio was still noticeable as something missing, then he popped the USB drive into the front of the Denon and ...Quadruple WOW the sound was out of this world, it was like standing right in the middle of a live concert.

The USB drive had true live audio tracks on it, and was unbelievable as to the sound.

Sadly I may well be one of those who wont notice the subtle differences ...as I'm at an age where Audio doesn't sound as good as it did 30 odd years ago ..
Apparently the bones in the ear begin to fuse together as one ages ..and certainly higher frequencies are the first to go ..
I remember the day I ceased hearing the 16khz whistle from the line output transformers in TVs when I was repairing them ..

I'm almost totally deaf in my left ear.

Not through age, but from percussive damage from four and a half inch Naval Gunnery.

I was the Weapons Engineering Officer and one had to lift an ear defender in order to give and receive orders ......

I have a hearing aid but it can be convenient not to use it!
 
My hearing is shot to pieces from birth. I hear nothing below 30dB at low frequencies and nothing below 60dB at higher ones.

That said.... I much prefer the *process* of putting the vinyl on the turntable, putting the needle arm on it, turning my preamp on, then the amp and just sit there and listen to the light pops and cracks along with smooth audio and a bit of my childhood.

Comparing digital audio to vynil is a bit like comparing analogue TV to digital. Yes, a good HD video knocks the spots off any analogue reproduction but sometimes you need little imperfections to make perfect.

Or am I just weird?
 
Lost it just over 12k ... better than i expected, i know my hearing is damaged :( ... 66 years old.
 
Lost it at 10 with my right ear and 11 with my left, but I have abused them in my past listening life.:) Looks like it's fractionally above average for my age, but I certainly do not find as much in music as I used to.
 
What a great site that tone generator is Evan.

I managed about 11.2KHz with the right ear, slightly higher than the left if anything. A bit above the average for my age they reckon.
