cheap meter and motorised system

I have recently bought a cheap "in-line" satellite finder meter off ebay for a fiver.

I hope this will assist with lining up my motorised dish when it arrives next week. I am going to make up some leads now to connect it up but was wondering does it matter if it goes between the LNB and motor, or between motor and receiver ?

Grateful for any advice on this.
 
Hi Tim,

I've used a budget needle/tone meter to line up my Astra dish and my first and second generation motorised systems. It can be quite fiddly but I've got good results.

I've always put the meter between the motor and receiver but I've also seen advice to say that you should connect directly between the lnb and receiver, assuming you have the dish and motor aligned and set up for your due south satellite.

Obviously you can't move the dish with the receiver if you try to peak up your dish with the latter method. Also you might want to put the receiver on standby whilst connecting/disconnecting leads in case you short out something.

I always connect the Meter at the LNB end of the Motor to LNB cable.

I agree with sonnetpete that it's a lot easier than you might think to set up a Motorised Dish.

One caveat: The cable stub that comes with the Meters is cr*p. The centre core is very flimsy and can either break or be bent over whilst connecting, so take care.

If it becomes u/s, make up a cable stub yourself with a couple of feet of decent cable and two effing plugs.
 
Steerable systems can be set up with a cheap meter, but you will have to use the attenuator to change sensitivity on different satellites.
