Jaeger 1224 restoration

sorted apart from 1 flaw. inside the base plate has also been completly covered. I masked off the area that needed leaving bare. whoever powdercoated them never got the memo.

Too cold to do anything constructive. I did buy some 16mm nuts with a 2mm pitch. These fit snug on the main elevation bolt which im reusing. Shaved off the excess powdercoat on the alloy base were the mechanism sits and gently ran a m6 tap into the 6 holes that were also clogged with powder coat. Got 4 new philips m6 bolts to replace the crusty originals that help secure the mech to the base. The internal bolts dont need replacing. Still need to get some of the self tappers that secure the plastic casing. The rubber seal/grommit the main shaft passes through has seen better days and could do with replacing. Need to take a closer look at it

the 4 pan head bolts that come in from underneath have been replaced with m6 cap head allen bolts. Couldnt find replacement pan heads that would fit the recess. the head diameter was a few mill to large.
 
great job, having the engine open if I were you I would put a reinforcement plate inside it, the structure is made with an aluminum alloy and other materials and sometimes it happens that it can break often in the EL version, in fact it broke into 2 pieces for me after the repair it became a rock

yeah ive seen those here.Its going in a pretty sheltered spot though so hopefully will hold up as is.
 
anyone recommend a source for replacement u/v bolts m10 130mm length, 100mm inner width. 60mm of thread.

Not sure what the u/v bolt is that you are referring to. Hope somebody can chime in.

But. And I seriously mean BUT.

Thoughts. How long has it been since that unit has been used? It has been out in the weather with temperature extremes for a long, long time.
I'd have to look back and see if you added photos of what's inside the gear housing.
Gut instinct tells me that the main gear is metal.
And a worm gear operates that.
Please. Take this as a serious suggestion and ask yourself. If one of the nylon gears should break. Where would you source a replacement?

If at the very least you don't look on YouTube and search for Silicone Casting Resin. Things like How to mold and cast a gear.
For a few. What do you all call it? "Quid"? Lol!! Keeping a few molds handy will save you A LOT of tears in the future.

The v/u bolts are to clamp the assembly to the pole. the holes are fixed to take a 4" pole regardless if the pole your mounting to is smaller.


it ran when i first got it, well without the weight of a dish on it. cleaned out the inner bearings, re oiled and greased. if it fails with a dish on it then i'll cross that bridge if needed. Im stunned it ever worked when you look at some of the gearing. Wonder how many rotations the first gear is required to turn to move the large gear on the main spindle 1 degrees.

I used it for 10 years with a 150 disc and never had any problems with the gears
the only problem was that it broke into pieces and I had to cover it with 2 heavy metal plates
and since then I have had no problems
3 years ago it was sold to make room for a KTI HH with chain and metal gears

yeah those. its a 1 size fits all 4" down to 2". Going to run a die down the old threads and see how they go.


Those threads on the V bolts are not a standard size, they seem to be a fine thread and unusual size. I drilled out the 4 bolt holes on the mounting frame to get them larger and wider apart then bought some 12mm stainless steel U bolts that required a slightly larger width between the left/right holes.

i counted 20 threads per inch which is a pitch of 1.25 so bought a m10 1.25 die nut off ebay to try.

i did see some 12mm u bolts with an internal diameter of 114mm

In my case, both U-bolts have M10x1.5 threaded parts, just checked.

the originals? can you check how many threads per inch. I just used the shadow of the thread on to a piece of paper. Same method for the elevation bolt and that worked well. for a 2mm pitch

what about the ubolts? the bolts above are 1.5mm. the ubolts have more threads per inch
