You know , those white circular ones that come with a long lead to run into poor reception areas of a property

Does anyone now if they use the full eight lines in the Cat 6 cable or the specific number that are in use ?

I have a potential project coming on .

You would think that they would use the POE standard (802.3af), that is the two orange/green pairs for data, and the 2 brown/blue pairs for the DC.

I had hoped the brown pair (Pins 7/8) would be clear of any use by these devices, so that I could purloin them for some other operation.

According to the link Jeallen has provided, only gigabit ethernet operation would have these enabled, unless I am reading the chart incorrectly.

Not sure that is correct - the paragraph on the linked page starting "Standards-based..." states this:

"Standards-based Power over Ethernet is implemented following the specifications in IEEE 802.3af-2003. A phantom power technique is used to allow the powered pairs to also carry data. This permits its use not only with 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX, which use only two of the four pairs in the cable, but also with 1000BASE-T (gigabit Ethernet), which uses all four pairs for data transmission. This is possible because all versions of Ethernet over twisted pair cable specify differential data transmission over each pair with transformer coupling; the DC supply and load connections can be made to the transformer center-taps at each end. Each pair thus operates in common mode as one side of the DC supply, so two pairs are required to complete the circuit. The polarity of the DC supply may be inverted by crossover MDI-X cables; the powered device must operate with either pair: spare pairs 4–5 and 7–8 or data pairs 1–2 and 3–6. Polarity is required on data pairs, and ambiguously implemented for spare pairs, with the use of a diode bridge. "

Therefore you could use a 100Mbs ethernet connection, and that would leave two of the four pairs free for your intended application.

Ref your original connection about the Wifi extenders: if you connected a 10M/100M ONLY network switch, and a not a GB one, to the router, then anything on the "far side" of that switch, including the extender unit would be operating in a 10M/100M circuit environment, and thus, you could presumably treat the latter as outlined in the quoted para above. You would need to find a 10M/100M PoE switch, but, IIRC, I think they are available s/h on ebay etc.

That description would also appear to allow you to "do almost whatever you want" in terms of DC connections to the secondaries of 2 pairs of the coupling transformers if you wanted to try "something different".

Interesting "aside" ref my CCTV system for which you fitted my cameras: the HiLook NVR has a "self adaptive 10/100/1000 Mbps network interface", whereas the cameras themselves have only a "10M/100M self adaptive" ethernet interface.

The BT extender (again I'm going on what I've seen ) is powered through the ethernet cable, presumably to keep costs down in supplying another PSU in the box.

So there would be four cable used, two for data, two for power.

The chart link confirms the standard for basic 802.3af leaves pins 7 and 8 free, though I'm unsure if the latest superfast broadband router system can switch to gigabyte operation, including the remote extender.

I may have to snip some wires and check.

My white BT disks came with their own PSUs

Nope a couple of mtrs of a rather unusual white flat cat 5 cable with yellow connectors

Flat white cable is probably more "aesthetic", and thus more "acceptable" in most households than round black cable! :D

Yes but the colour was not unusual just the flatness of it, nothing like the cat5 cables I have used

Again, flat cables can less "obtrusive" and more easily "disguised" than round ones.

I am aware of these qualities and the reasons behind them, why are you reminding me of them when it is CH that is the O/P and was wanting more detail about the cable supplied?

As for CH, he seems to have "other things" on his mind (hurricanes, cats, etc.) ATM:-rofl2

A week later and......

The extender at another client' house is black and is powered, so now I'm unsure if there is more than one type. BT call it a wifi disk.

They also has white ethernet cable, though apart from the full earth shileding at each end it does look like is isn't particularly flat.

I will have to do a bit more research, thanks for the info provided so far.

I've bagged one for testing and having opened it up, there are six out of the eight cables running from the LAN socket to the board, some pictures.

Ahhh two data pairs and one set for power....Hummm the power supply says 12 VDC at 2 amps, I hope they don't expect to run that through those two little bitty power traces on that PCB...Major burn out expected if so.

And I wounder how they phase those 4 little panel antennas for the WIFI signals.
