Ive just put The Running Man on the dvd player. Id forgotten it was set 30 years in the future ( so in 2017)

The film description is depressingly accurate!

In the year 2017, the world economy has collapsed. The great freedoms of the United States are no longer, as the once great nation has sealed off its borders and become a militarized police state, censoring all film, art, literature, and communications. Even so, a small resistance force led by two revolutionaries manages to fight the oppression. With full control over the media, the government attempts to quell the nation's yearning for freedom by broadcasting a number of game shows on which convicted criminals fight for their lives.
 
Won't be long before that film itself is on a proscribed list as un-American.
 
I always liked the efforts of Mr de Souza, but in truth his best work required non-celebrities of his screenplays to be truly effective. Charlie Brooker looks to be a willing understudy.

But that is Hollywood for you.
 
Hmm, not really sure how still allowing a million people to enter the country every week can be considered as closing the borders, did like the film at the time though.
