Replace sky plus hd box

Hi all, I want to replace my sky plus HD box with a thinner smaller sky q 2tb box (which will fit behind my TV) bought second hand if that's possible.
I have read that I have to upgrade my lnb on the dish to a wide and lnb(don't know how hard that is for me to do).
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
 
To my knowledge Sky Q boxes remain in Sky's ownership, so you won't see them for sale, the Q mini can be bought, but are useless without the main Q box.

To run a Q box, as you mention, a Wideband LNB is required, a straight swap out on a Mk4 Sky dish.
 
There are plenty of Sky Q boxes for sale .. usual Auction places and Facebook Selling Groups .. but don't try to subscribe with it :)

You could cut the lid off and some of the sides, see how much of a lower profile you can go.

There are Q's for sale on the usual fleapits but they are effectively stolen so avoid them - Sky do indeed retain ownership & they are supposed to be returned at the end of the subscription period. Sky are well within their rights to disable them at any time.
 
There were the same rules with Sky+ HD boxes. Sky subscribers are stopping their subscriptions all the time, and Sky don't bother to collect the old boxes. Sky will pair any Sky+ HD box without questions to any valid card - it's all done automatically on line.

In time the same will happen with the latest boxes. Probably it already works now.
 
Get one without any fear , no one is gonna knock on your door to ask any questions , i've had one for over a year and i haven't been arrested yet :)

No reason that Sky should have bothered to , or could, collect the old HD boxes as the customers would have complained because they had actually BOUGHT their boxes outright.

Time will tell - you're probably right but "time will tell".

Don't believe that's correct, Sky+HD boxes were under the same rules as Sky+ boxes, the customer owned them from the day they were delivered and were simply contracted for a year's subscription.

Sky Q boxes are in effect rented, whether Sky choose to turn a blind eye on someone who has acquired a secondhand box to upgrade their subscription is another thing, I guess it would be cheaper for them if the customer goes that route.

On reflection, I think there's a bit "twisted logic" from SKY here regarding those Q boxes where the orginal subscriber has cancelled their subscription:
- They can't really rent a returned box out to a new subscriber because they don't know what condition it is/will be in or how long it will last
- Therefore, if the subscriber sells it to someone else and that person takes out a new subscription, then SKY will "get the money" for as long as it lasts, and they can always deny any product reliability/liability claims on the basis that "you got it illegally as we never supplied it and so we don't know what condition it was when you got it".
- For them that could be a Win-Win situation = money coming in, but with no installation costs and no support costs.

Returned boxes go for refurbishment & testing and are then used for service replacements in the same way as they always have done with previous boxes

OK, if that's the case, then I accept that part of the story, but I still suspect that "money for nothing" to SKY from people selling Q boxes may have an "element of truth" in it.
