No signal from dish.

Hi all, I’m new on here and would like some help/advice. Sorry if this has been posted before be couldn’t find it on here.
My son had recently moved out and taken his Sky Q box with him and I purchased a Sky HD box to watch the TV channels through this but keep getting a ‘not receiving any signal from dish’ message on my TV, I’ve tried a friends receiver box that he uses and the same error message comes up with that, any suggestions please.

Sky Q uses a special type of LNB ( The lumpy thing at the end of the dish arm), which is not compatible with legacy receivers.

There is a hybrid LNB which permits both Q and legacy receivers to work, but you probably don't have one of those.

A solution is to get the LNB replaced with a standard "Universal" type.

Do you yourself have a Sky subscription, or are you using your son's?

Hi Lazurus, thanks for the advice, we won’t have a subscription just be using as it as freeview with having to put an aerial up, can the LNB things be purchased generally?
 
Yes, the LNB can be purchase easily and cheaply.

eg eBay Item 183919674184 (That example has four outputs, but you can get them with one, two or eight if required).

I wonder why you bought a Sky+ box, rather than a Freesat box?

Thanks, I will get one, we’re watching it this way as haven’t got a aerial.

Either way w.r.t. the receiver, avoid the ones with only 1 o/p because that'll limit any future system expansion and won't allow many receivers with twin tuners to perform as intended, and also the 8 o/p ones because the size and weight can make them more difficult to align (can cause the "feedarm" to sag!). So the best LNB choice is either a 2 or 4 o/p one - and I would choose the latter because it's quite small and easy to install, and also means that you could always add another sat receiver to the system simply by running 2 more cables from the dish to "wherever".

Another thread to look at if you have any problem with the "F-Connectors" on the ends of the cables, is how to fit a new one: How to fit an F type satellite compression connector to coax cable. - SatsUK

Also, there is a relatively recent and very informative thread on the importance of pulling down the LNB rain cover over the connectors after you have attached the cables, and there's also a lot of general info on fitting a new LNB, including the importance of setting the LNB "Skew angle" correctly - as, counter-intuitivelty, it almost certainly should NOT sit absolutely vertical in holder but be "skewed" slightlly off the vertical.

Unfortunately, I can't track that thread down ATM (can't remember the title) but I am sure that one of the forum Staff will be able to post a link to it very quickly.
 
If you or your son's sub has ended the equipment has to go back to sky as it's their property as sky q is rented in the contract, else one of you will get a big bill.
