End of life for Sky HD boxes.

They really are trying hard to get everyone onto SkyQ or Stream arent they. We will be moving over to Freesat & streaming once our HD+ box fails - Im not continuing to pay the sub once this box expires.

It's so they can switch off satellite around 2030. Sky Q can be repurposed as a streaming only device

The same streaming that can be obtained from the apps on any tv of course. Which is where out streaming will be originating. Im not giving Sky access to that sort of data.

Sky are trying to keep a walled garden, not going down the app route but requiring either a sky stream device or the silly Sky glass TV. Not sure it will work. Like you, many will just dump Sky altogether

I can add some clarification about what actually happens.

People who use a second HD+ box in a different location were able to switch their card between the two boxes whenever needed. Needed to pair the card every time it was switched to another box. This worked up to October 2024.

Now when the card is put in the second box, it asks for pairing, and displays "Pairing successful, please wait" onscreen. Premium channels never clear - although base channels (eg Eurosport, and many others) do work.

If asked, Sky will send another card (they disable the existing card). The replacement card will work in any SkyHD+ box (contrary to some information). It does not require pairing when first inserted, it comes pre-authorised. This new card can't be switched to a second box.

Do you mean the new card will automatically pair itself to the first box it's placed in? Otherwise, if it doesn't need pairing wouldn't it work in a second box?

That is a good question, and I don't know how it is done. These are guesses.

1/ They might have a record of the ID of last box that the card was paired to, AND was working, and the replacement card will only work in that box. If that is how it works, then the OP information is correct, the replacement card would not work in another box. I think this is unlikely, too many complications for Ѕky.

2/ The replacement card does pair itself to the first box it is used in, but pairing goes on in the background, and no messages are displayed on the box. If this is the method, then the replacement card could be used in any box, but once "paired" would not work in any other box.

When the replacement card is put into a different box, it goes through the familiar routine. It asks for pairing, and displays "Pairing successful, please wait" onscreen. Premium channels never clear - although base channels (eg Eurosport, and many others) do work.

A bit late to this thread but I am still happily using my Sky+HD box (past Dover) and if it ever dies I'll simply cancel Sky. I'm a firm believer in if it works why chuck it out.

The other thing is it's linked to a WaveFrontier T90 dish running alongside 19e (love darts on Sport1) and if I were to go to SkyQ (is that even possible anyway now?) I'd need a different LNB, right?

You'd need a wideband LNB, but you can get them for standard LNB holders, so you would be able to keep your T90.

You only "borrow" the SkyQ box directly from Sky and give it back when you cancel so it is harder to get hold of the receivers.

Thanks for the info. General question ... with Sky switching to streaming are they still likely to be so precious over ownership of Sky Q boxes these days?

There was a news report a week or so ago about a house that burnt down so the owner cancelled their SkyQ subscription. Some time later, they got a letter from Sky asking them to pay for the missing SkyQ box as it hadn't been returned. I think in the end Sky said they didn't need to send back the melted plastic remains and cancelled their demand. Can't remember where I read it so I can't give you a reference but it seems that, in some cases at least, they are still demanding the boxes back...
