A lot of system designs were in place 25 years ago. Some installations were running simple 22kHz switching for different polarities (not good with Sky boxes) and some would have a 13/18 for selecting a second satellite dish.

Can you get access to the roof for a picture of what is installed ?
 
Or if not, find a neighbour that has functional satellite TV in the building and copy their equipment.

Good idea. Not easily but we’ve got our AGM on Thursday so I’ll raise a request for photos and also normally about 30 odd owners turn up so should be able to see what satellite setups others have.

Any thoughts about the lifespan of the legacy equipment? I’m sure it’ll be in its own cabinet which is inside an enclosed roof access room so it’s protected from the rain but 25 years seems a long time for electronics to be installed in an unheated poorly insulated room exposed to winter cold and summer heat.

I doubt it is 'legacy' equipment in there, vintage more likely.

Take/post imagery of the socket in your apartment if you have not seen kit in another property.

I attended the AGM and I've asked our management company to investigate with our satellite installation company. Apparently they were asked to look at a similar upgrade on another apartment building but couldn't do it because of lack of space in the cabinet!

Here are photos of the front and back of the freeview/satellite socket in my apartment. It's a bit confusing because the photos were taken at different times so the backplate photo has the cable connected to the satellite socket and in the frontplate photo it's the freeview socket that 's connected to the cable.

Separately to my overall question about single cable with SCR I have another minor question for you please....

This freeview/satellite socket has a backplate connector for a set up with two cables, one for freeview and one for satellite but can I replace it with a socket where there's a backplate connector for a single cable carrying both freeview and freesat? The signal would then be split and I could connect up the freesat socket to the freesat tuner in my TV and the freeview socket to my Humax at the same time. Thanks for your help.

Yes you’re correct and that is now with the managing agents who are investigating with the satellite installation company. This is a separate issue I have currently, in that I cannot switch between watching freeview via my Humax recorder and watching freesat (live only) via the inbuilt TV freesat tuner, without rewiring the cable connection. Thinking about it, even if I do get the SCR upgrade and buy a Freesat or Sky Q recorder, it would still be handy occasionally to switch to freeview so this issue will still be valid. Hope that makes sense.
 
If that cable does indeed carry both UHF and satellite feeds, then by using a diplexing outlet plate, or a diplexing splitter, you can have both.1742390058930.webp1742390133599.webp

I’ve already asked the satellite company about this and their reply was that their understanding was we’ve got a single feed system and that any additional cables were most likely return feed cables for watching TV in other rooms. Not exactly definitive but I don’t think they’ve been on site for years. This is also the understanding of our committee and managing agents. TBH it’s very annoying that our agents don’t have all this written down in a ‘what you need to know to manage this block of flats’ book with a section called ‘how the satellite system works’ but maybe I’m expecting too much professionalism!

Yes, often in the older systems there was a feed to another room, so the question is do you have signal in the 'other room' ?
